〈생태 공방〉에서는 지구에서 인간과 함께 공생 공존할 수 있는 이로운 동물 중 하나인 거미를 ‘생태계의 수호자’라 재정의하고, 인간이 치는 ‘친환경 거미줄’ 작업을 전시 기간 진행한다. 미술관을 방문하는 모든 사람에게 열린 협업 작업이다. 면이나 마 그리고 대나무와 같이 오직 자연에서 얻은 천연 섬유 재료의 실을 이용하고, 전시 기간 인공 거미줄이 전시공간을 가득 메우고 미술관의 야외 공간까지 이어져 뻗어 나가길 기대하고 있다. 《대지의 연금술》 전시의 마지막 날에는 인간이 만든 거미망도 불에 태워져 철수되고 그 재는 땅에 묻힐 예정이다. 이는 자연의 소재로 만들어졌다 다시 자연으로 돌아가 땅의 양분이 되게 하는 방식을 택한 것이다.

커뮤니티 작업의 제목은 미국의 사회생물학자인 에드워드 오즈번 윌슨(1929-현재) 박사의 자연 친화 사상을 담은 〈바이오필리아(생물사랑)〉에서 영감을 받아 〈스파이더필리아(Spiderphilia (거미 사랑)〉라고 명명하였다. 이 협업의 전 과정은 자연의 미덕에 훼손을 가한 인간의 반윤리적 행위에 대해 반추해 보며, 인간과 자연의 상생 관계에 대한 환경 윤리적 마음가짐을 품은 공동체 행위라 할 수 있다. 거미의 수호 정신이 담긴 작은 세계를 통해 앞으로 인간과 자연이 함께 생존해야 할 거대한 세계의 바람직한 모습을 빗대어 볼 수 있지 않을까 새로이 생각해 본다.


The Saengtae Gongbang Community Project, Bongdam Village, Hwaseong City The purpose of the community practice is to create large-scaled, site-specific man-made webs in the museum. Its motive is inspired by diverse forms of spider webs in nature. Given with a redefinition of a spider as ‘a guardian of our ecosystem’, human beings imagine themselves as if quasi-anthropomorphic spiders construct their own eco-friendly spider webs made of environmental harmless materials such as cotton, linen, and bamboo yarn, which are organically produced from our nature. The ongoing collaboration will be conducted until the end of the exhibition and it can be accessible for all generations. The community work is expected to be gradually expanded with the passage of time to occupy almost entire spaces of the museum, and it is then reached out to entangle other elements in the outdoor spaces throughout the whole period of the exhibition. The artificial spider webs will be deinstalled on the last day of Earth Delight. They will be then burnt completely and the ashes will be buried in the ground. As the man-made webs utilize beneficially the natural fibers from the earth, they will be then returned to nature in order to become a nutrient for the earth. The community work entitled Spiderphilia (love of spider) is inspired by Dr. Wilson’s Biophilia (love of living things), which is the philosophical discussion of natural affinity and the very essence of life and humanity binding to other living species. Hence Spiderphilia reflects our affection for the awe-inspiring life of spiders. The process of Spiderphilia ultimately shares an introspective moment with the locals for the unethical treatment of our environment and having eventually harmed the virtue of nature.

Thus the collective, performative practice conceives the profound environmental morality and cherishes the Mother Earth. The microscopic world of spider with its role in ecological salvation reminds us of the possibility of seeing the desirable shape of the macroscopic world where humans and nature can sustainably survive together.
