로버트 맨골드

로버트 맨골드는 1960년대 미국의 전위미술을 주도했던 미니멀리즘의 대표적인 작가다. 절제된 색채와 간결한 기하형태로 구성된 셰이프드 캔바스(Shaped canvas)작업을 통해 회화에 있어서 절대적인 평면성을 추구하였다. 전후 미국미술을 주도하였던 추상표현주의의 낭만적인 표현방식에 대한 극단적인 거부를 시도한 미니멀리스트로서 작품을 개인의 감성이 배제된, 선 색 면 등의 기본적인 조형요소로 이루어진 구조체로 환원시키려 했다.

맨골드는 예일대학에서 건축을 전공하였다. 그의 작품은 건축적 구조에 대한 끊임없는 흥미와 관심을 보여주며 단순한 기하학적 형태로 구성된 구조물을 연상시킨다. 맨골드는 작품만이 아니라 그것이 걸리는 벽면과의 관계에 대해서도 진지한 태도를 보였으며 이것이 사각형, 타원형, 십자형 등의 비정형 캔버스 작업이 나오게 된 배경이기도 하다. 건축적 구조에 대한 맨골드의 관심의 일관성은 작품을 구성하는데 절대적이다. 그의 작품은 극적으로 단순화 된 면과 선으로 구성되는데 각 요소들은 개별적인 현상으로 드러나는 것이 아니라 하나의 통일된 응집으로 전체적인 화면의 효과에 기여한다. 수학적인 엄밀성으로 짜여진 이 요소들은 각각이 절대적인 동응함으로 결합되며 사소해 보이는 하나의 부분도 전체에는 필수불가결의 것으로 되어있다. 마치 건축물이 그러하듯이 부분들의 온전한 결합에 의해서만 작품에 내재된 고유한 논리와 조형이 설명된다.

Robert Mangold

Robert Mangold is a prominent artist within the Minimalism canon, which led the American avant-garde art in 1960s. He pursued a complete flattening of his paintings by employing shaped canvases, limiting the use of colors and drawing simple geometric figures. Mangold was a Minimalist who immensely disapproved of Abstract Expressionism and Romanticism's way of representation. And as such a Minimalist, he made an attempt to replace the artwork with a structure composed of pure color, line, and plane, which exclude an individual's feelings.

Mangold studied architecture at Yale University. His works constantly represent his own interest in architectural structures and refer to an architecture formed with austere geometric figures. Mangold was genuinely involved not only with the construction of his work but also the relation of it within the space and the walls of the gallery. This motivated this use of rectangles, ovals, and cruciform shapes of atypical canvas works.

The consistent interest of architectural structures is crucial for appreciating his works. His compositions are extremely simplified planes and lines. Each component is not shown as an individual element, but gets fully integrated within the canvas as a whole. These elements are mathematically organized and combined by the condition that each element has equal importance. As in architectural structures, the intrinsic logic and figure of the work can only be understood by the final assemblage of elements.
