<대지의 연금술> 전은 인류세라는 거대한 전환 앞에서 인간과 자연이 어떻게 하면 건강하게 상호 융성할 수 있을까? 라는 거시적 물음 속에 절망적이지만은 않은 양자의 관계를 밝고 이로운 정신을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 자연상태 위기에 대한 문제의식을 본질적으로 인간과 자연은 하나의 원천에서 나온 것이며, 서로에게서 배우며 서로에게 필요한 존재가 되어야 한다는 성찰에서 비롯된다. 독일의 시인인 노발리스(1772-1801)가 사유한 '타자로서의 자연'처럼 자연도 인간과 같이 영혼이 깃들어 있기에 우리와 동등한 관계에 있다고 생각하는 것이다. 그리고 '창조'와 '사랑'은 인간과 자연의 조화로운 관계를 가능하게 하는 근간이 된다. 그러므로 <대지의 연금술>은 인류세라는 전례 없는 변화에 직면한 지구에서 인간과 자연 생명의 영속이 공생공존하는 관계를 낭만적 시각과 윤리적 정서를 통해 바라보는 평화로운 환경 캠페인과 같다고 할 수 있다.

그러므로 <대지의 연금술> 전시를 통해 궁극적으로 자연생태를 바람직하게 보호하면서 활용하려는 동시대 산업과 과학 기술 연구의 각고의 노력을 발견해 보고, 귀중한 자연 생명의 소멸에 대한 염려와 향수를 자아내는 인간성 회복을 통해 우리의 감성을 자극하는 상상의 영역을 경험해 보고자 한다.

<대지의 연금술> 전에는 현재 뉴욕을 기반으로 작업을 하며 세계적으로 활발히 활동하고 있는 덴마크 출신의 뉴미디어 아티스트 제이콥 쿠스크 스틴슨(Jakob Kudsk Steensen)이 참여하고 있다. <Re-Animated(부활)> (2019)와 <Re-Wildling(야생회귀)> (2018) 영상작을 통해 화와이의 야생숲에 서식하다 멸종한 다양한 희귀 새들에 대한 기억과 그리움을 소환하여 작가가 창조한 가상 현실 속 자연 생태계에 부활시킴으로서 환경 파괴라는 크나 큰 오류를 범한 우리에게 자연물의 생명가치의 소중함에 대해 반성적 의식을 일깨우게 한다.

쿠스크 스틴슨의 전시와 더불어 <대지의 연금술> 전의 한 부분인 화성시 봉담 지역 커뮤니티 프로젝트 <생태공방>을 진행한다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 지구에서 인간과 함께 공생공존할 수 있는 이로운 동물 중 하나인 거미를 '생태계의 수호자'라 재 정의하고, 인간이 치는 '친환경 거미줄' 작업을 전시 기간 동안 진행한다. 미술관을 방문하는 모든 사람들에게 열린 협업 작업이다. 면이나 마 그리고 대나무와 같이 오직 자연에서 얻은 천연 섬유 재료의 실을 이용하고, 전시 기간 동안 인공 거미줄이 전시공간을 가득 메우고 미술관의 야회 공간까지 이어져 뻗어나가길 기대하고 있다.

커뮤니티 작업의 제목은 <스파이더필리아(Spiderphilia, 거미사랑)> 이다. 이 협업의 전 과정은 자연의 미덕에 훼손을 가한 인간의 반윤리적 행위에 대해 반추해 보며, 인간과 자연의 상생 관계에 대한 진정한 환경 윤리적 마음가짐을 품은 공동체 행위라 할 수 있다. 그리고 거미의 수호정신이 담긴 작은 세계를 통해 앞으로 인간과 자연이 함께 생존해야 할 거대한 세계의 바람직한 모습을 빗대어 볼 수 있지 않을까 다시금 생각하게 한다.

            

Earth Delight

Um Museum, Celebrating the 5th Anniversary Silently with Alarming Impact of the COVID-19 Outbreak, Return to Nature for the Future of Humanity Global Warming and Environmental Destruction, the Epic Risks of Disappearance of Creatures from the Inherent Nature, the Quasi-Resurrection of Extinct Species in Virtual Ecosystems Culture-led vitalization, Encouraging Freedom and Ownership of Culture Sharing, Expanding the Sociocultural Role of the Contemporary Art Museum Um Museum cautiously introduces a timely exhibition entitled Earth Delight in these turbulent times of social and economic conditions confronting the COVID-19 pandemic. The infectious event alarms us once again the drastic relevance of environmental destruction to a new outbreak of virus.

The fundamental idea of the exhibition begins with asking a macroscopic question how a thriving life of man and nature can be coexisted sustainably in the epic scale of the anthropogenic transition. The exhibition is positioned to see ethical concepts on the age we made, and it explores prospectively hopeful and wise spirit to look at the relationship between the two inseparable parts on Earth. By profoundly rooted in the philosophical idea ‘Nature as a You’ contemplated by the German poet Novalis (1772-1801), it discusses the relevance on the man-nature relationship that nature as humankind has spirit, thus it is thought of as the unique counterpart to humankind. In relation to this environmental philosophy, a crucial perspective of the exhibition on the contemporary environmental crisis sees an insight into the essence of nature we perceive that human and nature spring from the same source, and they learn from each other. Thus the mutual existence of human and nature needs for each other. In this light, ’creativity’ and ‘love’ are primary features to fulfill harmoniously the equivalent relationship between humankind and nature. 

Holding the particular attitude to the environmental issue, Earth Delight is regarded as a peaceful campaign that manifests a romantic vision and ethical sentiment towards the unprecedented impact of humanity of the man-made world.

The exhibition explores some thought-provoking stories of spider introduced by contemporary industries and remarkable experiments in scientific and technological research for such mutual enhancement. In accompany with those painstaking endeavors in reality, it also invites an extended reality, which profoundly leads us into a meditative and monumental realm of the quasi-resurrection of extinct species creating through contemporary work of art. It presents an illusory utopian ecosystem, which is meticulously implemented in a virtual landscape in order to bring back the disappearance from our Earth. The work simultaneously stimulates our own evocative emotion to retrieve memories of the species many years ago.

Thus the exhibition aims to evoke an experience of the unique ecological imaginary, faith in humanity restored anew intertwining with art and techno-scientific experiments.
