엄 미술관이 2019년 가을 전시인 <루이스 부르주아와 반 겔더: 알렉스 반 겔더의 루이스 부르주아 초상 사진전>을 오는 10월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 개최한다.네덜란드 출신의 사진작가 알렉스 반 겔더의 눈으로 본 세기의 조각가 루이스 부르주아(1911-2010)의 생의 마지막 이 년 동안의 모습을 비춘 이 초상사진은 자연인으로서 살아가던 노장의 소박한 모습과 쉼 없던 창작활동의 흔적을 진솔하게 담고 있다. 부르주아의 오랜 친구이자 작업 동료였던 반 겔더와의 협업을 통해 작가의 뉴욕 집과 작업실에서 촬영된 매우 사적인 모습을 담은 초상사진이다. 말년에도 끊임없는 창작의 호기심을 이어갔던 부르주아는 연기와 사진이라는 새로운 영역을 통해 자신의 초상사진 작업을 위한 실험을 펼쳤다. 부르주아와 반 겔더의 협업은 부르주아의 말년 창작활동의 연장 선상에 있었다. 이들의 협업을 통해 우리의 마음속에 들어 있는 정형화된 초상의 틀에 대한 생각을 확장하고, 사회문화적 통념 속에 의식화된 미를 쫒지 않는 표현의 자유와 창작의 독립성을 다시금 보게 한다. 우리 시대의 가장 영향력 있던 예술가 중 하나인 부르주아의 말년 모습을 비춤에 있어 세기의 예술가라는 이상화된 관념에서 벗어나 소박한 날 것의 미를 그의 마지막 모습 속에서 새로이 발견하게 한다.<루이스 부르주아와 반 겔더: 알렉스 반 겔더의 루이스 부르주아 초상 사진전>은 2015년에 출판된 반 겔더의 부르주아 말년 초상 사진집인 『멈블링 뷰티 루이스 부르주아』에 수록된 총 여든한 점의 사진 작품에서 서른세 점을 초대하여 본 미술관에서 전시하게 되었다. 사진집이 세상에 소개된 지 사 년 만에 처음으로 다시 전시를 통해 만나게 될 루이스 부르주아의 마지막 시간과 모습을 통해 생전의 작가를 되돌아보며 아울러 동시대 초상사진의 자유로운 창작 정신과 저자의 다양성을 경험해 본다.

Um Museum is pleased to present an exhibition entitled Louise Bourgeois & Van Gelder: Louise Bourgeois Portrait Photography by Alex Van Gelder from 1 October to 31 December in 2019.Dutch photographer Alex Van Gelder captured late life and work of Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) in her final two years of her long life spanning nearly a century. The portrait of Bourgeois features the artist as a down-to-earth personage and offers a glimpse of her late creativity continued until the last years of her life.This particular portrait photography was realized through collaboration with the elderly artist who was his longtime friend, and was taken at her home and studio in New York. The portrait is now remained as an evocative marker that reminisces about the last traces of the artist’s new endeavor and experiments with employing acting and photography, and her ceaseless curiosity on the late style of creativity.The portrait photographic practice and the resulting images, some of which could be considered an extension of her late work, open up varying ideas of artistic autonomy and independence upending a conventional way of looking at how the acclaimed personage is supposed to be presented in existing social and cultural myths. Their collaborative work emanates unique energy of unpretentious and raw beauty.Louise Bourgeois & Van Gelder: Louise Bourgeois Portrait Photography by Alex Van Gelder presents thirty-three works of Bourgeois’ last portrait photographs selected among the eighty-one pieces featured in a book entitled Mumbling Beauty Louise Bourgeois by Alex Van Gelder published in 2015. Since its first introduction to the world, it returns to us four years later as a formal exhibition for the first time around the world. The exhibition will offer a rare insight of liberal and creative spirit and diversity of authorship in contemporary portrait photography by looking back at one of the greatest artists of all time.
